Why we built it this way
Security controls are sold on what they prevent and reviewed on what they logged. In almost every case the log is written by the vendor, held by the vendor, and read through the vendor’s console.
So when someone asks whether that record is complete and unaltered, the honest answer is: as complete as the vendor says it is. That is a trust relationship wearing the clothes of an audit trail.
